Abstract

Background: Advanced practice nurse (APN) students lack the opportunity to practice independent clinical decision making during clinical rotations; however, it is possible in high-fidelity simulation-based training.
Methods: A two-day simulation-based training course was designed to improve the clinical competence of APN students. Data about seven students were collected before and after training through a self-reported questionnaire.
Results: The results showed a statistically significant improvement in clinical competence, especially assessment and critical thinking, following the course. The students also reported satisfaction with, usefulness of, and enjoyment in participating in the simulation-based training.
Conclusion: Simulation-based training can strengthen the clinical competence of APN students. However, a competency-based education model should be developed for standardized simulation-based training to ensure the quality and safety of APN programs.
